I joined the Bramley Golf academy about 6 years ago. I had never played golf and thought it would be a great thing to learn and a new hobby to develop - something I could do into my dotage!
After 1 to 2 years, I 'graduated' from the Academy with a golf handicap. Bramley was great for me as it combined group and private lessons within the reduced annual membership fee, good practice facilities, ability to borrow clubs, and a like minded group of people who were also learning, that I could play with. Bramley also run a buddy group, where members provide help & support and come out and play with you. There were regular fun short rounds of golf in a texas scramble format which means you play together. It is a very friendly, supportive environment.
The Academy is mixed - attracts both men and women. Bramley has a strong women's section as well.
At first it seems a bit scary to join somewhere on your own and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do it. But everyone, essentially can play golf, it just takes a little perseverance and encouragement. The handicap system means that you can play with people better than you and still have a great game.
It was one of the best decisions I made. I can now play golf anywhere, have an additional hobby, belong to a local club and have developed a new group of friends. It's also a great way of spending a few hours - most golf courses are beautiful and the walk keeps you fit.
